ACPET seeks your support for travel concessions for
international students in NSW and Victoria

    Dear ACPET member

I am writing to seek your support in gathering current student opinion on travel concession passes by asking your international students in all Australian states to complete a quick survey.

Despite calls from across the sector and recommendations by the Federal Government, NSW and Victoria are the only two state governments who do not offer travel concessions to international students. Both governments maintain that offering international students the same travel concessions as domestic students is simply too expensive.

ACPET is sourcing data on the economic effects of this inequity, particular as lost opportunities for both governments' trade and education budget projections. While members in other states may have concerns about efforts to make NSW and Victoria more attractive destinations for international students - the overall effect of the NSW and Victorian policies are to further act against Australia's interests in representing itself as a welcoming destination for international students. Put simply we all benefit if state governments make students feel welcome when they come here to study. Understandably, ACPET has secured the support of state and national business groups and various international student council bodies, who will also be promoting this survey.

To support our research and our case to government on this issue, we would appreciate if you promote the importance of completing a quick and anonymous survey to all of your international students (past and present).
    The survey is available here.

Please forward this e-alert to all your trainers and assessors of international students and request that they make time for the students to access and complete this survey no later than Friday 17 February 2012.

ACPET's position paper will be finalised when we receive the results of the survey. A copy will be made available to all ACPET members and representations will be made to both governments during late February and March.

Please give this your attention and action - the student voice is critical in supporting ACPET's advocacy on members' behalf.
